About Bujagali Dam

The Bujagali Dam is a major hydroelectric power station on the Nile River in Uganda, near Jinja. Completed in 2012, it has an installed capacity of 250 MW, significantly boosting Uganda’s electricity supply and reducing reliance on thermal power. The dam was developed as a public-private partnership to address energy shortages and support economic growth.

The Bujagali project faced delays due to environmental and social concerns, including displacement of communities and impacts on the Bujagali Falls, a cultural and tourist site. Despite controversies, it remains a key contributor to Uganda’s grid, operated by Bujagali Energy Limited. The dam’s reservoir covers 25 km² and helps stabilize power supply.
